20's Plenty for Richmond

Busting the Myths

“Cars travelling at slower speeds use more fuel”

Accelerating to 30mph uses just over double the fuel needed to reach 20mph.

“20mph can’t be enforced”
The Metropolitan Police supports enforcement. Measures to beef up their role in enforcement have been included in Transport For London’s Vision Zero Action Plan for reduced danger on our roads.

“Slower speeds aren’t necessary everywhere, the priority should be around schools”
80% of child casualties are on non-school trips.

“Cars already move quite slowly, 20mph won’t make much difference”
Research shows that small declines in speed make a big difference to casualties: for every 1% fall in average speed, casualties fall by 6%.

“Car journeys will take longer”
20mph doesn’t significantly alter travel times. It is congestion, stops and hazards which delay drivers.
